The IST Library’s Historical Collection holds around 7,600 volumes of monographs from the 16th to the 19th centuries, in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, History, and Literature. Over the years, it has been enriched with works that bear witness to the transmission of scientific knowledge, technological progress, and the teaching of Engineering in Portugal, while preserving the Institution’s memory.

The collection includes works of great historical and thematic value, with some references to exhibitions, congresses, and travels, standing out for its engravings, drawings, and maps.

With the aim of contextualizing the collections regarding their historical importance and subsequently promoting and making them available, the IST Library intends to launch a digitization program for the collection – “IST Library’s Historical Book Collection Project”, which will allow for preservation and sharing with the community.
