∗ Who can access the IST Library?
All library locations and local access to the entire collection are freely available to all of the academic community and the general public.
∗ Where can I find the IST Library?
The Library is on all three IST campuses, in the Alameda campus it covers various locations.
∗ What are the Library’s opening hours?
The various locations that make up the Library have different opening hours. Check here each locations’ opening hours.
∗ Is it required to show any type of ID to access the Library spaces?
No, it is not required.
∗ I want to donate books to the Library, how should I proceed?
See to the procedural guidelines for the donation of documentary holdings to the IST Library.
2. Collections |
* What type of resources are available in IST’s Library?
We provide books, e-books, scientific journals in print and digital, scholarly works and technical standards.
* What is the digital library?
The digital library refers to the collection of platforms, databases and services where all of the Library’s digital resources are provided. Among them b-on and Scholar.
* Can I access the digital library outside of the IST campus?
Yes, but you must enable IST’s VPN service.
* What is b-on?
b-on is an online platform that provides access to thousands of scientific journals and e-books from some of the most important content providers.
* What is Scholar?
Scholar is IST’s institutional repository where all of the school’s scientific output is made available.
* How can I access IST Library’s resources?
You can browse the resources through the University of Lisbon’s content aggregator (EBSCO Discovery Service) or by checking the Collective Catalog. For a more in depth look into our resources check our Collections page.
3. Loans |
∗ Who can borrow books? Who can access our book lending service for home use?
All IST community can borrow books for home use.
∗ How many books can I borrow simultaneously and for how long?
Our book lending service for home use falls under a defined lending policy depending on each user’s role.

∗ How can I renew a book loan or make a book reservation?
To renew a book loan or make a book reservation the user should access his profile’s personal reader area inside our catalog. More information about our book lending service in the catalog page.
∗ How can I request books or articles not available in IST’s Library?
In such situations you should use the Interlibrary Loan Service (ILS).
∗ I’m from another University. Can I borrow a book from IST’s Library?
No, you may only consult the resource locally.
You may, however, check if your University’s Library also has an Interlibrary Loan Service (ILS) available and borrow it that way.

∗ Where can I access the Library’s user literacy programme?

∗ I’m an external user, can I attend the literacy courses?
Yes, you can.
∗ How do I apply?
You should apply by filling the registration form available at our Literacy Courses website the week prior to the session taking place.
∗ Can I suggest new topics?
Yes, you can suggest new topics by sending an email to bist@tecnico.ulisboa.pt
6. Other services |
* Does the library only have technical books?
No, the Library has many non technical books in its collection.
We also provide a reading booth filled with books from romance to other literary genres whose motto is “Take, Share, Read, Return“.
* Does the Library have group study rooms?
Yes, the Library provides group study rooms. For more information concerning availability and reservations please check the study rooms page.
* I need a DOI or ISBN, can the Library help?
Yes, the Library provides a service for the conferral of DOI and ISBN identifiers. Check the DOI assignment service and ISBN assignment service pages for more information.
